This classic antique Victorian Albert chain is made up of sterling silver trombone links, cased in a sunny 18ct yellow gold and is complete with its original T-bar and clasp, bearing Birmingham hallmarks, dating to 1880 and the maker’s mark (J.M.). The chain has been extended with additional links and holds a large medallion at the end, depicting Ares/Mars (the God of war) in the centre, with blue enamel highlights around the sides.
Albert chains were traditionally a practical accessory, worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. They have since evolved into versatile and stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.
This luxurious Victorian Albert chain is perfect for layering with other gold chains or worn alone as a statement piece. The style is as popular and sought after today as it was in the 19th Century, and this is a wonderful example, with a good weight and bright yellow bloom.
