De Cornus kousa 'Weiße Fontaine' (Japanse grootbloemige kornoelje) is een absolute blikvanger voor elke tuin brengt. Wat deze specifieke cultivar zo uniek maakt, is de weelderige, bijna trapsgewijze groeiwijze. De takken hangen naarmate de struik ouder wordt gracieus door, wat een spectaculair 'fontein'-effect van bloemen en bladeren creëert. Deze traag groeiende sierheester of kleine boom bereikt op volwassen leeftijd een hoogte van zo'n 3 tot 4 meter. Hierdoor is de 'Weiße Fontaine' uitermate geschikt voor zowel de middelgrote als de grotere tuin, waar hij prachtig tot zijn recht komt als solitaire blikvanger.

Bloemen en blad Cornus Kousa

In de maanden mei en juni transformeert deze Japanse kornoelje in een ware bloemenzee. De kornoeljeboom produceert grote, helderwitte schutbladeren die de eigenlijke, onopvallende bloementjes omringen. Na de bloei ontwikkelt deze heester decoratieve, roze-rode vruchten die uiterlijk wel wat weghebben van frambozen en erg geliefd zijn bij vogels. Het blad is frisgroen, licht gegolfd en hangt fraai naar beneden, wat bijdraagt aan het fontein-effect. In het najaar trakteert de 'Weiße Fontaine' je nogmaals op een visueel spektakel, wanneer de bladeren verkleuren naar diepe, warme tinten geel, oranje en rood.

Ideale standplaats en bodem Japanse grootbloemige kornoelje

Voor een optimale bloei en gezonde groei verlangt de Cornus kousa 'Weiße Fontaine' een vrije plekje in de volle zon of halfschaduw (halfzon). Hoe meer zonlicht de plant krijgt, hoe rijker de bloei zal zijn. Qua bodemomstandigheden is deze kornoelje wel wat fijngevoelig: hij houdt van een goed doorlatende, humusrijke en licht zure tot neutrale grond. Belangrijk is dat de bodem voldoende voedzaam en constant licht vochtig blijft, maar absoluut niet kletsnat wordt (vooral in de winter). Het toevoegen van tuinturf of organische compost bij het aanplanten geeft deze struik de perfecte start.

Combineren Japanse grootbloemige kornoelje

Prachtige combinaties ontstaan wanneer je hem samenvoegt met zuurminnende lagere beplanting, zoals Rhododendrons, Azalea's of de fijngebladerde Acers (Japanse esdoorns). Ook een onderbeplanting van schaduwminnende vaste planten zoals Hosta's of diverse bosvarens zorgt voor een prachtig gelaagd contrast.
