Je moest eens weten…’ – ‘Bir bilsen…’ in het Turks. Zo beginnen veel vrouwen hun levensverhaal als fotograaf Çiğdem Yüksel ze opzoekt. Het zijn vrouwen zoals haar oma, die hun thuis verlieten om in Nederland een nieuw leven op te bouwen. Hun verhalen ontbreken in ons visuele archief.

Yüksel brengt daar verandering in met foto’s uit familiealbums, interviews en portretten. De vrouwen vertellen over de pijn van migratie, heimwee, verdwaald raken en je weg vinden. Werken, zorgen voor de kinderen, de taal leren. Liefde en ongelukkige huwelijken. Beknot zijn als vrouw en emancipatie. Hun bijdrage aan de Nederlandse economie als fabrieksarbeider of schoonmaker, en hun strijd voor vrijheid en gelijke rechten. De verhalen zijn divers, gelaagd, dubbelzinnig, zoals elke menselijke ervaring dat is.

Een aantal van deze vrouwen is door fotograaf Bertien van Manen vastgelegd in Vrouwen te Gast (1979). Yüksel heeft hen opnieuw opgezocht en geportretteerd. Ze zijn nu tussen de 60 en 80 jaar oud, de tijd dringt om hun verhalen een plek te geven in de Nederlandse geschiedenis.

They sent me a new bag and here is the email I sent them back. Very happy now. ....The biltong showed up last Thursday! I'm sorry i kept forgetting to email you. It is delicious. It's night and day difference between the bag I got through Amazon originally. This bag was pristine and the taste is spot on. Every piece is a perfect slice, no shreds or fluff. Dark, rich brown color, not hay colored like the old bag. I really think that the other bag got very hot or something and out the taste off. Thank you so much. Now I know that if I am in the mood for biltong, Ayoba-yo is a good choice. Thanks for the customer service as well.....

I have been lucky to visit South Africa a few times in my life. What is not lucky is coming home to the United States and craving biltong. Biltong is a magical, sugar-free, barely processed jerky and once you try it, you will never want to eat American beef jerky again.
