Portraits of the Last Golden Age is the latest major monograph on the work of Budapest-based artist Attila Szűcs (b.1967, Miskolc, Hungary), one of the leading painters in Hungary today. Following on from his 2016 monograph, Specters and Experiments, published by Hatje Cantz, Portraits of the Last Golden Age features a substantial in- conversation between Szűcs and Sándor Hornyik, an art historian, curator and senior research fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. ‘Mankind is in an extremely tense situation,’ Szűcs asserts, ‘with the escalation of natural disasters, with artificial intelligence getting out of hand, the world can easily take a dystopian turn.’ During the course of the conversation, the two men discuss topics ranging from portraiture to posthumanism, meditation to metaphysics, intuition to the irrational.

In addition to presenting examples of Szűcs’ accomplished and haunting monochrome works on paper employing materials such as acrylic, charcoal and graphite, the publication features over seventy oil paintings made between 2019 and 2023 depicting dark dreamscapes and transcendental scenes of alternate realities. Disembodied hands grab or caress, as if apparitions from another dimension; sleeping figures exhale multi-coloured breath that verges on the supernatural; long golden hair flows down the side of a bed, pooling on the floor like an uncanny waterfall; heads float in dark water as if decapitated; otherworldly fires rage while apocalyptic explosions highlight environmental disasters and humankind’s seemingly unstoppable drive towards auto-destruction. Szűcs’ work is both an exploration into the human psyche and into the universe itself, much of which is as-yet unknown: quantum worlds and multiverses, the complexities of time and space, and the possibilities of an afterlife. Bleak yet beautiful, dark yet dazzling, Szűcs’ practice asks what painting can bring to twenty-first century thinking and image-making.

Produced by Erika Deák Gallery, Budapest, and co-published by Anomie Publishing, London, the publication features texts in English and Hungarian, translated by Dániel Sipos.

fair narrative, has good information
Format: Kindle
Sparta is somewhat of a mystery. This book provides the reader with basic historical data, yet it lacks deeper detail. Sparta deserves more

...interesting ...
Format: Kindle
Impressive research - resulting in an interesting read. Can tend towards overboard descriptions when a more concise format would be appreciated by the reader. The formatting could be better with regards to headings and appropriate spacing. Lots of detail to get through.

Sparta the Greek warrior city state
Format: Paperback
In ancient Greece there was no equal to the military skills of the army of Sparta. They started training young men at the age of seven with exercises that made their weapons an extension of their body. This let them weild weapons with more precision than their enemies. This is just one of the fun facts found in this book about Sparta. As with many nations which put their focus on the strength of the military forces Sparta was constantly at war. They were suspicious of the motives of other city states and often attacked before they could be attacked. We can learn much by learning of the Greeks and their relationships with each other, their alliance systems and their causes of wars. Comparing national alliance systems and causes of wars today with those of the Greeks we can learn many lessons. We can see things they could have done to prevent the carnage and and use it to our advantage. This book also gives a glimpse into the living conditions of Sparta. It explains the social structure and the government structure of Sparta. It tells of the role of women in the Spartan culture. Many times we use the term Spartan to describe a minimalist life style. This book describes the living conditions of the Spartans showing where that term originated. All of the above and much more is well described in this book about the ancient city of Sparta. As a former history teacher I highly recommended this book to everyone. This should be available to all. It is a must read
