Millet Prolighter 22L - The Lightweight Summer Alpinism Backpack (630 g)

You leave the hut in the dark, headlamp burning, the glacier going from black to blue as you gain height toward the ridge - and for the next few hours you want to think about the line above and nothing else. On a summit day every gram you carry up you carry back down, so the pack has to earn its place and then get out of the way. The Millet Prolighter 22L is built for exactly that: a 630-gram alpine day pack stripped to what a summer ascent actually needs, with ice-axe and ski carry, a frame that hugs your back, and not one buckle past what a summit day asks for.

Its whole design is in service of moving light and fast. A side ski carry and Millet's FPP™ ice-axe attachment hold your tools securely without flapping, a removable hip belt lets you ditch grams once the load is light, an extensible mesh side pocket and a front zip pocket keep skins, a bar or a topo within reach, and a hydration sleeve so you sip on the move instead of stopping on exposed ground. Narrow and close to the back, it stays out of the way on a scramble - which on exposed rock is exactly the point.

The fabric does the heavy lifting: a PA 210D Honeycomb Robic ripstop chosen for strength-to-weight, so 630 grams never means flimsy, reinforced with Recycled PES 600D over a Recycled PES 250D lining and water-repellent to 1,000 mm. At least 20 % recycled content by weight. The grams came out of the feature list, not the cloth - and behind the pack is a house that has built alpine kit in Annecy since 1921 and still repairs it in its own workshop. A light pack you keep, not one you replace.

What Makes the Real Difference on the Mountain

The Prolighter 22L doesn't try to be a do-everything pack. It commits to one thing - carrying a light alpine kit fast and stable - and cuts everything that doesn't serve that.

  • 🪶 Only 630 g: seriously light for a pack with real ski and ice-axe carry, without feeling flimsy.
  • ⛏️ FPP™ ice-axe carry: holds axes securely, easy to deploy with gloves on.
  • 🎿 Side ski carry: a real attachment for spring couloirs and ski approaches.
  • 🎒 Removable hip belt: keep it for support, strip it to save weight.
  • 💧 Hydration compatible: bladder sleeve to drink without stopping.
  • 🧗 Narrow, stable body: stays out of the way on scrambles and steep ground.

Access is deliberately simple: a zip-and-clip top closure opens the main compartment fast, a front zip pocket takes the small essentials, and an extensible mesh side pocket stretches around a water bottle or a stowed layer. An adjustable chest strap, ergonomic shoulder straps and load-lifter adjustment pull the weight in close, and a key clip means you never dig for them at the trailhead. Nothing extra, nothing missing for an alpine day.

Who This Backpack Is For

The Prolighter 22L is for people who count grams because they climb - summer alpinists, scramblers and ski mountaineers who want a pack that carries the tools and then gets out of the way.

  • You move fast and light - summit days, glacier approaches, alpine scrambles, spring ski lines.
  • You carry technical tools - ice axe, skis, a light rope, with attachments that actually hold them.
  • You want a pack you forget you're wearing - narrow and close to the body, so it never swings out on a move.
  • You value a clean design - simple access, the right pockets, a strippable hip belt, no dead weight.

It asks one honesty of you, though: this is a stripped pack. There's no integrated rain cover and no panel-style suitcase opening here - if you want a do-everything 4-season pack with built-in weather protection and big organized pockets, the UBIC 25L or UBIC 30L is the smarter buy. And if your alpine days run long or overnight, the bigger Prolighter 30+10L carries the same light-and-fast DNA with room to grow. But for a fast summer ascent where every gram counts, nothing gets out of your way like the Prolighter 22L. Part of the wider Millet backpack range we carry.

FAQ

+

Through the fabric, not by cutting corners. The main body uses PA 210D Honeycomb Robic, a ripstop weave engineered for a high strength-to-weight ratio, reinforced at wear points with heavier Recycled PES 600D. The weight savings come from a stripped feature set and a minimal frame - not from thin, fragile cloth - so it holds up to rock, crampon points and ski edges on real alpine days.

+

FPP™ is Millet's dedicated ice-axe attachment system, designed to hold one or two axes securely against the pack without the head flapping around - and to let you deploy or stow a tool quickly, even with gloves on. Combined with the side ski carry, it makes the Prolighter 22L a genuine ski-mountaineering and alpine day pack rather than a hiking bag with a loop sewn on.

+

For a fast-and-light summer ascent, yes. 22 litres takes a light shell, an insulated layer, gloves, food, a 1.5 L bladder, harness and basic glacier kit, with the ice axe and skis carried outside. It's deliberately sized for moving efficiently on day missions - if you need to carry a rope, rack and bivvy gear for longer routes, step up to the Prolighter 30+10L.

+

No - and that's deliberate. The Prolighter 22L is a stripped alpine pack, so there's no integrated rain cover; the fabrics carry a 1,000 mm rating and a durable DWR finish that handle snow and showers, but for sustained rain you'd add a separate cover or a dry liner. If a built-in rain cover and full weather features matter more to you than grams, the UBIC 30L is the better-equipped choice.

+

Same light-and-fast philosophy, different scope. The Prolighter 22L (630 g) is a fixed-volume day pack for summit days and ski approaches. The Prolighter 30+10L (1,000 g) expands from 30 to 40 litres, adds a rope carry, a hauling handle and a more supportive carry system for multi-day alpine routes. Pick the 22L for fast days, the 30+10L when the route needs more kit.

+

Yes - the hip belt strap is removable. On a light summit day you can strip it to save weight and keep a buckle from sitting under your climbing harness; with the load held high and close to your back, 22 litres rides fine on the shoulders alone. Keep it on when you're carrying more or want extra stability on a long approach. A hydration sleeve sits inside either way, so you still drink without stopping.

+

A light alpine pack picks up rock dust, sun cream and sweat more than mud - wipe it down and let it dry fully before storing. Hand wash at no more than 40 °C with a mild soap if it needs more, and never tumble dry, bleach, iron or dry clean it, as that strips the DWR. Re-proof the finish occasionally, and because the Prolighter is built to be kept rather than swapped out, Millet repairs worn straps or seams in its own workshop instead of sending you for a new pack.

A winning toy!
Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel, Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel
This is the best dog toy ever! I have a Cockapoo that is 8 years old but thinks she is 2. She chews up everything so I've gone thru a lot of dog toys. This toy has lasted 6 months - truly record breaking for her. It's become all raggy so time to get a new one. Thank you Nocciola for inventing a quality fun toy that lasts. Photo shows toy after 6 mo. of playing tug of war!

Winner of the aggressive chew competition
Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel
I bought several toys for an insane Jack Russell and this is the unlikely winner. It is a softer toy, but it is stitched together nicely and there are various components that distract the dog and keep him busy. First, it can be rolled up and stuck with small but strong Velcro patches, so it’s not just a sitting duck, the dog has to figure out how to unroll it which is fun. Next there are five little pockets on one side that you can put treats inside, which draw attention to the toy and give him another task. He did partially rip some of the flaps on the pockets in his zeal to get the treats. Then there is the squeaker, which he dispatched of in like 4 seconds (somehow without ripping the fabric(?)), then there are all sorts of crinkles and textures on both sides. All of this and the good stitching make it a toy he wants to play with but that he doesn’t annihilate in one day. The hard plastic toys are also good but I feel like I need to watch him carefully for fear that a sharp chunk will come off. The medium chew toys are cool but he’s just not into them. So this wins!

My dogs favorite toy!
Color: Blue & Yellow Eel Bundle
This is my Jack Chi and Yorkies favorite toys (it helps when they get 5 mini milk bones). It is a tough toy, but not impervious to a Jack Chi determination to remove all squeekiees! Squeekie or not, it's still their favorite toy for tug-a-war.

Fun Toy
Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel, Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel
My dog loves this toy. It has 2 squeaky & also has crinkly sound along with the slots for treats. However it is not very durable. The treat slots were pretty much destroyed with the first use. I'm still giving it a 4 star because it is so fun & entertaining for my GSD.

Kept puppy interested!... Till she chewed it apart in 5 minutes
Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel, Color: No Stuffing Blue Eel
I'll start off by saying this is a really unique toy. You really can hide treats in the pocket and the velcro is strong enough to roll it up that it won't come undone easily. The different textures and sounds interest my puppy! And she LOVES it! But it didn't last long with her. She LOVES rope toys and ripping them apart and eating it. I literally had just given it to her and not even a minute later (not joking), she had torn off a row of the rope-like part. 5 minutes later, the tail is already in shambles lol So long story short, great and interesting toy to keep the doggy from being bored. Maybe not so great for aggressive chewers/rippers in the long term. More than likely will be torn to shreds by the end of the day.
