ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

How 19th-century Gothic literature helped scientists develop the medical category of the criminal psychopath and serial killer.

Criminals like Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy have captivated the collective imagination, introducing the archetype of the serial killer into the vast pantheon of cultural references we understand as the mythology of the 21st century. But where does our macabre obsession with these morally void figures come from? How has artistic production influenced the development of the scientific category of the psychopath and the serial killer? Advances in research over the past decades have united the various causes of psychopathy; however, it is in classic Gothic literature where we can see the first signs of this unsettling condition. Surprisingly, this genre endowed literary monsters with defining traits of the criminal and serial psychopath that science has validated over time.

In the canonical texts of the 19th and 20th centuries, the chameleon-like figure of the monster takes shape, enchanting readers with its lack of scruples. Consider Frankenstein, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula, or The Picture of Dorian Gray. Since the reflection on our psychological and moral condition began, more authors have explored, through literature and film, the inexplicable cruelty that drives humanity. For instance, The Island of Dr. Moreau, whose protagonist foreshadows the Nazi atrocities of Dr. Mengele, or The Silence of the Lambs, which forever transformed the psychokiller genre.

This innovative and thought-provoking essay offers an engaging symbiosis between comparative literature and criminology, helping us understand how the persona of the criminal monster has been forged over time.

Dog approved.
Size: X-Large, Color: Cheese
I’m a 70 lbs Goldendoodle (supposed to be 65, don’t ask) and I love cheese. Real cheese. Sharp cheddar with sourdough bread is my dream, but apparently I’m “on a health journey,” so my people bought me this instead. Does this bone actually taste like cheese? No. I am not fooled. Do I still enjoy chewing it loudly while my humans are trying to watch TV? Absolutely yes. This bone satisfies my need to chew and my emotional desire for cheese-adjacent activities. It keeps me busy, saves the furniture, and lets me crunch dramatically during important dialogue scenes. The yellow color is nice — very cheese-coded — although some cheeses are white, so just something to consider for future versions. Also, good news: it doesn’t smell like cheese at all, which my humans seem very grateful for. Apparently they don’t want the carpet to smell like a deli. Weird. Final verdict: Not cheese. Still enjoyable. Would chew again. ~Barley

Puppy loves it! Great activity.
Size: For Medium Dog, Color: Grassgreen
My 5 month old puppy absolutely loves this toy. She spends hours chewing on it and squeaking. It’s heavy enough duty that she can’t bite the side parts off but she can munch on it at the back of her teeth. Great for cleaning teeth! She did bite some of the little nubs off but I expected some of that. It’s really the perfect hardness for her. Worth buying!

He loves it! It will probably be destroyed soon though...
Size: For Medium Dog, Color: Green, Size: For Medium Dog, Color: Green
Update! This toy has definitely withstood my boy's daily chewing! It's lost some pieces for sure, but overall it's holding up and I'm very happy about it. The only downside is the squeaker is rather difficult to get to make noise. Will still definitely invest in another when this one finally goes. Original review: I bought this for my handsome pitbull/boxer mix -- the boy loves to chew toys up! He's an aggressive chewer and he was bored with the current toys we had. This toy is advertised for chewers, and I imagine if my boy wasn't such a great chewer, it would be amazing! We've had it three days now and he's already gotten a few big chunks off of it. It is definitely entertaining him though! He loves it and he seems like he's chewed himself into a daze. There is a squeaker in the bottom that seems difficult for him to get to so it doesn't squeak often -- when it does though he freaks and it's hilarious. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. My boy is a very aggressive chewer and I know pretty much anything we get him will be destroyed soon after he gets it. With how much he is enjoying this toy, I will be buying it again for him.

Outstanding Chew Toy
Size: For Large Dog, Color: Green
My dog is beyond an aggressive chewer. Toys are in pieces in minutes no matter what the manufacturer says. The squeaker? Forget it gone immediately. She has had this toy for two days and not only is it intact but she hasn’t been able to remove the squeaker!! Great product!!!
