The MKH 800 TWIN is a universal studio condenser microphone of exceptional quality. It features a dual capsule consisting of two symmetrical push-pull transducers with high linearity, delivering pristine detail for voice, music, and ambient sounds. Designed as a side-fire microphone, the two cardioid pickup patterns are aligned back-to-back to offer remarkable consistency and natural tonal balance across a wide range of recording scenarios. This combination of precision engineering, low self-noise, and robust construction makes the MKH 800 TWIN a compelling choice for professional studios, broadcast environments, film production, and field work where reliability and sonic clarity matter most.

  • Dual symmetrical push-pull transducers deliver outstanding linearity and a wide dynamic range, capturing subtle nuances of voice and instruments without coloration. The result is a natural, transparent sound that remains faithful from intimate dialogue to room ambience, with minimal distortion even during loud transients.
  • Side-fire design with back-to-back cardioid patterns provides exceptional off-axis rejection and predictable imaging, making it ideal for close-miking in busy studios or on-set environments where reflections and adjacent sources can color the capture.
  • Rugged all-metal construction, compact form, and a professional XLR output integrate smoothly with standard preamps, mixers, and audio interfaces. Built for reliable studio and field use, it withstands regular handling and rigorous production schedules without compromising performance.
  • Low self-noise and high SPL handling accommodate a wide range of sources, from delicate whispered dialogue to dynamic orchestral passages, preserving clarity and reducing the need for aggressive compression during post-production.
  • Versatile for studio, film, and broadcast applications, the MKH 800 TWIN pairs easily with pop screens, shock mounts, and standard mic stands, enabling quick, repeatable placements across different scenes and projects.

how to install Sennheiser MKH 800 TWIN

  • Connect the microphone to a suitable preamp or audio interface using a balanced XLR cable; verify that the gain control allows for a clean, undistorted signal.
  • Enable phantom power on your mixer or interface to supply 48 V to the microphone; ensure that phantom power is not applied to non-condenser gear.
  • Mount on a sturdy stand or boom and position the mic at the intended side-fire angle; for dialogue or close-miked voices, place slightly to the side and above the monitor line to minimize proximity effect.
  • In environments with ambient noise or wind, use a pop filter and, if needed, a windscreen or shield; a shock mount helps isolate the mic from handling noise and vibrations.
  • Perform a quick test by recording a short sample; listen for tonal balance, consistency across the capture area, and any leakage from nearby sources; adjust distance, angle, and gain accordingly for the best result.

Frequently asked questions

  • What makes the MKH 800 TWIN different from other cardioid mics? The MKH 800 TWIN uses dual symmetrical cardioid transducers arranged side-fire, back-to-back, delivering superior linearity and off-axis rejection. This design produces a transparent, natural sound with consistent performance across a range of recording scenarios.
  • Do I need phantom power to use this microphone? Yes. As a condenser microphone, it requires external phantom power (typically 48 V) supplied by your mixer, audio interface, or power supply to operate at full specification.
  • Is the MKH 800 TWIN suitable for voice, music, and film? Absolutely. Its universal design and dual capsule configuration make it well suited for dialogue in film, voiceover, broadcast, and a broad spectrum of musical applications, from intimate vocals to ensemble capture and ambient rooms.
  • Can I use this mic in a small home studio? Yes. The MKH 800 TWIN's low self-noise, robust construction, and flexible side-fire geometry make it a strong choice for home studios seeking professional-grade results without excessive room treatment.
  • What accessories enhance the MKH 800 TWIN experience? A high-quality shock mount, a stable stand, a suitable windscreen or pop filter, and premium XLR cables will help you maximize clarity, minimize noise, and ensure repeatable positioning across sessions.

Building something wonderful out of the broken pieces
Format: Hardcover
Meg Eden Kuyatt has done it again. I am a big fan of novel in verse, and this author is one reason why. The poetry delivers character, setting, and story in a clear, believable voice. The protagonist, V, is a middle school girl full of feelings, celebrating her difference while fighting for her place in the wonderland of neurotypicals. V introduces herself in vibrant socks that say “I am strange and wonderful.” And with that, we are off. V is reluctantly spending the summer with her grandma Jojo in the pristine white house that has been in her family for generations. History is definitely living here. The house is a character itself (and a metaphor). I love that V’s cousin Cat creates assemblages, an art form I was not familiar with. Cat describes it as taking discarded, broken stuff and turning it into something beautiful (another metaphor). There is a lot going on here and a satisfying resolution brought on by a heaping dose of empathy. Highly recommend for the suggested audience (juvenile fiction, grades 3-7), their teachers, and families with neurodivergence.

Emotionally messy relationships with unreliable narrators
Format: Hardcover
Meg Eden Kuyatt guides us through a beautifully lyrical journey into the life of V, an autistic girl forced to spend the summer with her overbearing grandmother. The story is often more metaphorical than literal, which works well thematically since it revolves around emotionally messy relationships with unreliable narrators, making the details of both the past and present difficult to pin down. Overall, a great read that will be appreciated by both kids and adults looking for mature, nuanced stories about dysfunctional families and the autistic experience.
