Each filter size, (except the 37mm size), comes with one or two stepping rings that can be used to attach the filter to different sized filter thread. For example:

49mm | 40.5mm & 46mm Variable

49mm = The thread size the filter will fit WITHOUT using a stepping ring.

40.5mm & 46mm = Two stepping rings with be provided, allowing the filter to fit a 40.5mm thread and a 46mm thread.
