"Refocus: Multicultural Focus" is a reprise of the exhibition "Multicultural Focus" which was mounted at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery Barnsdall Park in 1981. Originally sponsored by the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies, this exhibition, the first cross-cultural exhibition of photography in Los Angeles, was selected to be one of two official shows of the Los Angeles Bicentennial in 1981. It was also selected as the outstanding photography exhibition of the year by a Los Angeles Times critic.
The revised catalogue reflects the work of 19 of the original artists exhibited at the Arena 1 Gallery in Santa Monica, California in 2012. The catalogue also includes essays by Deborah Bright, Carla Williams and Paul Von Blum. This exhibition was part of the compliment of exhibitions comprising Pacific Standard Time, a Getty art initiative.
