Notes
I believe that only a singer-songwriter can pay tribute, in music and voice, to another singer-songwriter.
It's a matter of "elective affinities." For this reason, I proposed to Ninni Arini to undertake this project with me. And Ninni immediately replied: "yes." Many things make Ninni Arini and Luigi Tenco kindred spirits, starting with their extraordinary personal sensitivity, almost the sole driving force of their art, which prompts them to narrate life with a deeper "vision" than the common person. And then their origin from a seaside place, and thus, in some way, their belonging to the sea itself, understood as an immense physical, but also metaphysical, space, a place of the soul.
When approaching the reinterpretation of a great song, often well-known to a very wide audience, it is necessary to clarify why one is doing it, to find the best way to do so. In our case, the motivation was the search for an authentic tribute, which could only be achieved by going to the source, to the purest and most intimate nature of the songs. Thus, the choice to rely on essential arrangements, totally free from any superstructure linked to the thousand possible "orchestrations" that could in any way obscure the intimate beauty of the pieces, seemed to us a conditio sine qua non. And so: guitar and voice; guitar, cello and voice; piano and voice: this is what you will find on this album, where essential but wonderful harmonies, interpreted by three musicians of absolute caliber, such as Paolo Passalacqua on piano, Michele Pantaleo on guitar, and Enzo Toscano on cello, accompany the voice, and the heart, of Ninni Arini in the development of Luigi Tenco's melodies and words.
And there is also an original song by Ninni Arini, "Si parte," which Ninni wanted to dedicate to Luigi.
As per Velut Luna's long tradition, two other elements characterize this album - like so many of our other productions over the last 20 years - and these are the places where we recorded and the recording method. We decided to record in two real, genuine environments, marvelous for their acoustic and aesthetic beauty. And then we decided to record in a live-in-studio format, meaning live, without overdubs, without any corrective editing cuts, in the purest "live" form. Thus, we enthusiastically accepted even those inevitable, tiny imperfections that represent LIFE, including some innocent ambient noises.
Therefore, the majestic yet intimate vaults of the large and historic Cantina Martinez in Marsala, with its centuries-old, enormous barrels, treasure chest of precious and well-known wine, provided an extraordinary visual and sound setting for the pieces performed with guitar and cello. While the beautiful room in Ninni Arini's home in Mazara del Vallo served as the chosen space for the pieces accompanied by piano.
