An exceptionally fine and rare Anoxypristis sawfish rostrum sympathetically conserved out of the original matrixes fossil bedrock. Several teeth have been re-seated back into the dental alveoli socket. From a scientific viewpoint, this specimen is highly important, from a collection and aesthetic point of view a rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete Anoxypristis sawfish rostrum. When the sawfish decayed on the seabed, the cartilage within the rostrum would have been removed by predators and eventually decayed by bacteria, leaving rostrum and teeth to be covered by sediments, and eventually fossilising through through eras.
On discovery, the upper matrix was carefully removed before a burlap jacket was placed around the newly revealed section for a stable removal from the fossil matrix for further transportation, and further restored at THE FOSSIL STORE™ lab where the plaster was removed and replaced with the original sand from the origin source for an authentic and secure backing to the Anoxypristis rostrum.
Prehistoric sawfish attained a great size from 20 to 25 feet, making them difficult targets for predators. The sawfish rostral teeth assist in the hunting of prey, whilst also use=ing these unique weapons to defend and fight off vicious predators. The Anoxypristis fossil discoveries determine that this species would have been often found inshore, venturing into estuaries, and swimming upstream into rivers - the perfect habitat, and hunting ground in warmer waters where such subtropical environments were prominent.
