INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Safely & Effectively Operate Explosive Power Tools (EPTs) course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in safely setting up, operating and maintaining indirect action explosive power tools, including selecting correct fasteners and charges, controlling hazards, and completing fastening tasks in accordance with safety, environmental, manufacturer and workplace requirements.
Safely and effectively operating explosive power tools involves using a controlled fastening system that relies on explosive charges to drive fasteners into base materials such as concrete or steel. Because EPTs present high-risk hazards such as projectile discharge, ricochet, noise, vibration, dust, accidental firing and misfires, safe operation requires strict adherence to WHS obligations, manufacturer instructions and task-specific controls. Effective EPT practice is essential to preventing serious injury, protecting others in the work area, avoiding damage to structures and services, achieving compliant fastening outcomes, and ensuring tools and explosive charges are handled, stored and maintained correctly.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply EPT operating requirements, make informed judgements about safe setup and fastening decisions, and recognise the practical steps required to plan, carry out and complete EPT fastening tasks under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you clarify task requirements, plan work activities, and apply WHS requirements including the use of safety plans, policies, SWMS, JSA, SDS and relevant safety manuals, as well as environmental requirements and legislative obligations relating to EPT activities.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely and effectively operating explosive power tools, including planning and controlling high-risk hazards, selecting appropriate PPE, fasteners and charges, setting out and completing compliant fastening tasks, managing misfire risks, and completing maintenance, storage and clean-up requirements—confirming your readiness to operate EPTs safely within construction site operations.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
This course assessment is based on the following topics:
1. Task clarification and planning for setting up, operating and maintaining indirect action EPTs
2. WHS requirements for EPT work, including safety plans, policies, SWMS, JSA, SDS and safety manuals
3. Environmental requirements for EPT activities, including environmental plans and legislative obligations
4. Safety signage and barricade selection, placement and control of the work area
5. Calculating material quantity requirements for the fastening task
6. Pre-operational checks of EPTs for safe operation in accordance with manufacturer specifications
7. Selecting and correctly fitting PPE specific to EPT hazards and the work environment
8. Selecting fasteners to suit the job requirements, base material and material being fixed
9. Setting-out fasteners using drawing information, including regulated minimum distances and edge distances
10. Positioning and levelling materials, then temporarily fixing or clamping to the designed location
11. Selecting the correct EPT charge based on material, base type and required penetration
12. Installing and using EPT attachments and accessories (including manufacturer channel, rebate and other attachments)
13. Loading fasteners and charges correctly and operating the EPT to fix fasteners in line with manufacturer and legislative requirements
14. Checking fastening penetration depth, adjusting the power regulating device, conducting test firing where required, and applying misfire procedures
15. Post-operation requirements: stripping/assembling where required, cleaning and lubricating tools, periodic maintenance and logbook completion, replenishing charges/fasteners, and secure storage of used/unused charges, fasteners, EPT and attachments, plus environmentally friendly waste management and clean-up
